The dang crankshaft keyway and timing gear are broken, it’s confirmed another 1.8L Miata crank-wobble!
RIP WALLET.

I thought it was the 1.6 that had that problem.

This is finally happened to my ‘02 1.8L and my friend’s VVT motor (unknown year, it’s a village bicycle-Miata of track days and autocross that’s now on its third VVT motor) died about two years ago to the same thing. Granted, our died differently. His made great turbine noises before dying at an autocross and seizing the engine, mine outright lost power in the middle of one before I shut it down to prevent any further damage.

The answer is
not
always Miata.

It’s still the answer, just gotta fix it, every car will have at least one inherent flaw that’ll need to be addressed eventually...especially if you keep driving it hard.

That is certainly an option. I would not like to have an inherent problem like that, though.
